Luke Perry has made a steady career for himself in television since becoming a household name in the 1990s on Beverly Hills, 90210. His latest role, as a con man masquerading as a psychic in tomorrow night’s episode of TNT’s Leverage, came about through literally running into an old friend, show executive producer Dean Devlin. Perry says he played the on-screen husband to Devlin’s spouse, Lisa Brenner, in the 2008 TV movie A Gunfighter’s Pledge. “He loaned me his wife – that’s cool!” And there was no one cooler back in the day than Perry’s 90210 bad boy, Dylan McKay. I talked with Perry about some of his characters and how he views his career these days, so read below for our conversation and check out a preview of tomorrow’s episode of Leverage.

The cast of Leverage is pretty tight. Did they make you feel at home?
It’s funny because most of my work on the show is with Jeri Ryan, and she’s a bit of a guest there herself. That sort of fell upon the crew to make me feel welcome. And the lady who did my hair, she was the lady who cut my hair on 90210! I walked into the hair and makeup trailer, and I was home! I was like, “Hey, guess what: You guys are on my show this week!”
How much fun is it to play a fake psychic guy, the kind of sketchy dude you might normally see in the middle of the night on an infomercial?
I always wonder about those guys: Why are people watching them at 3 in the morning on the infomercial? And are they not seeing what I’m seeing because clearly this guy is full of [stuff] from out here. But not everybody sees it that way.
Did you watch a lot of those aforementioned infomercials to get into the con-artist mindset?
No, I pretty know the drill. I’ve seen this sort of thing play out before. [Laughs] The trick in a situation like that is to stay away from it and not make it like those guys — just create a guy who does this and put him in that situation.
In recent years, you’ve played a cult leader, a reverend, a rapist, and now a fake psychic con man. Do you enjoy those seedier roles?
When they are well written. Real obvious bad-guy stuff is less fun to play. All those characters, I believe there’s a common thread between them, and it all interests me: It’s about people who really need help and want help, to understand different things in life. Some people are just looking to follow, and for everybody looking to follow, there will always be someone there to lead them. But it’s where they lead them and why that has always interested me. That was a chance to play one of those characters. This was a guy who tells them what they think they want to hear, and he does it clearly for money, which makes him not a good guy in my estimation.
And it’s less like an over-the-top bad guy. He has a calm, cool, confident malevolence.
It’s like Bernie Madoff – you can’t steal $70 million if you’re nervous about it. That’s the amateurs who do all that, but if you really want to steal, you’ve gotta just be cool about it and steal, and that’s what this guy does.
Your character is all about reading people. After working with so many people over the years, do you feel like you can read people better than you could 20 years ago?
I think less good. I was a lot sharper 20 years ago. I was probably faster 20 years ago, too. It’s just one of those things.
You do the occasional TV job in addition to stage and voiceover work. You seem to embrace the variety of show business life.
My whole thing about being an actor is it allows you to do so many different things. And even within acting. There are so many different mediums in which you can apply your work, and I dig that. It’s like a quarterback: You’ve gotta run the ball, you’ve gotta throw the ball. You do a little bit of everything. I try to run a multi-balance wishbone offense. I do whatever I need to put the “W” on the board.
Would you have imagined your current career back in your ’90s heyday?
Well, I’ll tell you now what I told you then: I really don’t predict much. [Laughs] I don’t know what I’m going to be doing at any given time. But I’ve always wanted to have opportunities to work in the theater and make movies and televison, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
Girls used to put pictures of you in their lockers and such when you were on 90210, similar to the uber-popularity the kids in the Twilight films are going through now. Looking back on your days as a teen idol now that you’re older, can you see it in a different perspective?
I just kinda smile at it. I met one of the Twilight kids. I almost did something with his dad, and in the process in meeting with the father, I met the son. He was a very nice, well-mannered young man. His name is skipping my mind right now, but he was talking about that he was very busy doing all the interviews and all the stuff. I just told him, “You know what? Eat a big breakfast, because that’s not going away anytime soon. You’ll be busy.”
Would you ever consider being a series regular again someday?
I swear, if you ask me that question tomorrow, you’ll get a different answer. I love TV, I grew up watching TV, I’ve always loved it. I’ve never been one of these guys who was like, “Yes, but what I really want to do is movies…” No, it’s TV for me, it always has been. I’m sure eventually it and I, we’ll find each other again. |
